PANAGIOTIS G. HALVATSIOTIS MD, PhD
Medical Associate Professor of Pathology – Diabetes.
He completed his circular studies at the Standard Evangelical School of Smyrna and after the entrance exams entered the Medical School of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens. During his studies he received a scholarship from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, The State University of New York (SUNY), NYC, USA where he attended part of his studies as a visiting student.
He completed his doctoral thesis with a "Excellent" grade with a scholarship from the "Alexander Onassis" Foundation and entitled "The administration of the hypothalamic growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF-1-44 NH2) in the diagnostic approach of cases of dwarfism at the 2nd Pre-Pedagogical Pathology Clinic of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1992.
He served his term as a commando paratrooper doctor in the 2nd Parachute Squadron and as a rural doctor in the Prussian Evrytania clinic.
After the Clinical training at the 2nd Pre-educational Pathology Clinic of the EKPA at the Evangelismos Hospital and after the special examinations he received the title of specialist Pathologist in 1997.
He completed with an International Scholarship (European Grant) the Fellowship in the Endocrinology Clinic at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA and in 2000 he was granted a special certificate by the Ministry of Health for completing further training in Diabetes both in Greece and in the USA and the possibility of being designated as the Head of an Outpatient Diabetic Clinic. In 2019, after the passing of the relevant law, he was granted the title of Diabetologist.
In 2002 he was elected Lecturer of Pathology-Diabetes at the Medical School of the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and in November 2022 he was elected to the rank of Associate Professor of Pathology-Diabetes.
TEACHING PROJECT
As far as his teaching work is concerned, he participates in education and as an examiner of third-, fourth- and sixth-year medical students, as part of their training in Internal Pathology, in clinical semiology despite the patient's bed, in differential diagnosis, diabetes mellitus and clinical genetics. He also participates in the training in pathology and in the field of diabetes mellitus of the medical specialists of the 2nd Pre-educational Pathology Clinic where he serves in the P.G.N "Attikon" as well as the specialists of the 2nd Clinical Intensive Care Unit, the 4th Pathological Clinic, of the 2nd Cardiology Clinic, the 2nd Anesthesiology Clinic, the 3rd Surgery Clinic, the 3rd Obstetrics and
of the Gynecology Clinic of the P.G.N "Attikon" but also those of the 1st Pre-Educational Surgery Clinic of the University of Athens, at the GNA "Ippokrateio". He also participates in the diabetes education of the specialist doctors of the Diabetes Center of the 2nd Preventive Pathology Clinic at the Attica hospital, as well as of the new doctors in learning the techniques they will use, in the design and execution of their research protocols, as well as in the interpretation of the results.
He participated as an examiner of the Internal Pathology course at DIKATSA for the graduates of Medical Schools of third countries and is a supervising Professor or Member of the three-member and seven-member committees in a total of 23 doctoral theses.

He participated as chairman of meetings in 13 International and 55 Panhellenic meetings and as an invited speaker in 21 international and >300 Scientific meetings.
CLINICAL PROJECT
After graduating from the Medical School of Athens, he initially worked as a Scientific Associate at the Diabetes Center and the Artificial Pancreas Unit of the 2nd Pre-Educational Pathology Clinic - Research Unit and Diabetes Center of the University of Athens at the "Evangelismos" GNA. During the period (1990-1997 & 1999-present) he worked at the 2nd Pre-educational Pathology Clinic of the University of Athens, initially at the G.N.A. "Evangelism" and then in P.G.N. "Atticon" both as a scientific associate, as a specialist in Pathology, as a Lecturer, then as an Assistant Professor as a Permanent Assistant Professor and as an Associate Professor, attending pathological patients in the Clinic and diabetic patients in the outpatient clinic of the Diabetes Center of the Clinic.
In the period 1997-1999, he first worked for the completion of the Fellowship with certification from the Post Graduate School of Medicine of Mayo Clinic for his continuing education in Endocrinology and Diabetes Mellitus and then periodically at the Endocrinology Clinic at the Mayo Clinic, (Rochester, Minnesota , USA).
He is in charge of the "Molecular Biology and Protein Metabolism" Laboratory at the Research Unit of the 2nd Pre-Educational Pathology Clinic of the University of Athens, P.G.N. "Atticon". He has been elected for 6 consecutive terms 2016-2022 as a Member of the General Assembly of the Faculty of Medicine as a Representative of the Department of Pathology, he has been an elected Member of the Scientific Council (2008-2012) and the Board of Directors as a representative of the doctors (2012-2018) of the .G.N. "Attikon", he was elected from 2011-2024) to the Board of Directors where he served as Vice-President of the Association of Faculty Members of the Medical School of Athens, elected Elector of the Medical Association of Athens in the Panhellenic Medical Association (2015-present), elected Member of the Supreme Disciplinary Council of of the Panhellenic Medical Association (2015-2019), General Secretary at the Scientific Research Institute of the Panhellenic Medical Association (2015 – 2019), Board Member. of the National Diabetes Center (E.KE.DI.) as a representative of the Panhellenic Medical Association (2015 – 2017), Board Member. initially and from 12/2020 until February 2024 Chairman of the Board of Directors in G.N.A. "Hope". He is the Representative of the Pathologists of Greece in the Union of European Specialist Doctors, UNION EUROPÉENNE DES MÉDECINS SPÉCIALISTES (UEMS) (02/2022 to date).
RESEARCH PROJECT
He was involved in the study of growth retardation syndromes in childhood (Doctoral Dissertation), the investigation of the action of antidiabetic preparations, gastrointestinal hormones, cyclosporine in transplants, the techniques for measuring glycosylated hemoglobin and the effect of glycosylation, the development of a special electronic medical file for the diabetic patient and the digital integration of all Diabetes Units on a national scale, with their metabolism
of proteins and gene expressions in diabetes mellitus, the study of musculoskeletal and growth factors in diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance in sepsis and thyroid function, mitochondrial function and oxidative stress, with gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, mental burden of mothers with fetal loss, epigenetics in pregnancy, the evolution of Covid infection in obesity in diabetes and gender, the medicinal effect and side effects of anticoagulants, the safety of implantable heart valves, molecular methods of detecting food contamination and also their nutritional - antioxidant value, sugar fluctuations
as an aggravating factor for stroke, the effect of statins on multiple sclerosis, the effect of cytokines and their genetic polymorphisms on diabetes and obesity, the protective effect of olive oil on the development of malignancy, thrombogenetic disorders in pulmonary hypertension, and certification of rapid and safe molecular techniques in the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses. He participated in the Kapodistrias research program and the European MediDietAgent.

EDITORIAL PROJECT
He was responsible for the content and publishing of multi-authored books (editor) in the translation into Greek of the two-volume edition of the European Manual of Internal Medicine, Editorial Board of the European Board of Internal Medicine of the UEMS, 3 international multi-authored editions as Guest Editor (2) and Co – Editor, is a reviewer in 25 peer-reviewed international scientific journals that have an impact factor and are included in SCI and was a Member of the International Peer Review Panel of the Ministry for Science, Technology, and Innovation of Denmark for the allocation of research funds for diabetes, obesity and skeletal muscle physiology (2011). He was a program evaluator at the State Scholarship Foundation (2008-2009), a reviewer of papers at 22 international and pan-Hellenic medical conferences, he participates in the writing of the Diabetes Guidelines of the Hellenic Diabetes Association from 2011-present, he has written chapters in 11 teaching books and participated to the authors in 48 scientific papers published in scientific international journals and foreign language conference proceedings. His work has been cited more than 900 times in the international literature.

He completed his secondary studies at Evangeliki Model High School in Athens and received the bachelor MD degree from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
During his studies he followed teaching courses under a scholarship in the Mount Sinai Medical School, State University of New York (SUNY), NYC, USA, as a visiting student.
He received his PhD degree from the Medical School of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (Honors category degree), supported by a scholarship from the “Alexandros Onassis” Foundation.
He served his Mandatory Army duties as an Airborne special force medical doctor and his mandatory rural services at the Outpatient Medical Clinic of Proussos Village in Evrytania prefecture, Greece.
He was named internist in 1997 successfully passing the required boards with residency completed in the Athens General hospital "Evangelismos". In continuation under a European Grant he was enrolled in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA for his fellowship in Endocrinology.
He was given official permission to run a Diabetes outpatient Clinic in 2000 from the Hellenic Ministry of Health and the title of Diabetologist in 2019 in accordance with the new legislation.
He was elected Lecturer of international Medicine-Diabetes in the Medical school of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens "Attikon" and recently (Nov.2022) elected Associate Professor in the same institution.
TEACHING DUTIES
He participates in the teaching program and in the qualification examinations of the Medical Students in the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and the residents of various departments of Attikon hospital in the field on Internal Medicine and Diabetes Mellitus.
He is also taking teaching duties to young health scientists in the Research Unit of his Department and to the fellows trained in diabetology in the Diabetes Center of the Attikon hospital.
He is supervising or participating as a member in the 23 committees to candidates for their Doctoral Thesis.
He also belongs to the faculty, with teaching duties, in 6 Post-Doctoral Academic programs for master's degree.
He participated as a chairman in 13 International and 55 National meetings and has been invited as Lecturer in 21 International and over 300 National scientific sessions.
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
He is enrolled as a clinician in his department at the General University Hospital of Athens "Attikon" following either inpatients or outpatients in Diabetes Clinics.
He has been elected to serve the Scientific Council and the Board of "Attikon" General University Hospital from 2008-2018. He has also been elected in the General Assembly in the Athens Medical school, representing the Internal Medicine Sector for 6 consecutive terms.
He served as Vice Chairman of the Athens Medical school Faculty Members Union. He had been elected as a representative (Elector) of the Athens Medical Society to the Panhellenic Medical Association for 3 terms and had been elected as a Member of the Supreme Disciplinary Council of the Panhellenic Medical Association (2015-2019).
He also served as Chairman of the Board in the General hospital of Athens "Elpis".
RESEARCH DUTIES
His research interests were in the investigation of newer anti-diabetic drugs, children with retarded growth, gastrointestinal hormones, digital applications in Diabetes Clinics, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, epigenetics, Covid-19 infection, side effects of blood thinning medication, safety of artificial heart valves and in the development of the newer molecular techniques for viral detection.
He is a member of 12 national and 5 international societies in the field of Diabetes Mellitus, Obesity, Metabolism, and Internal Medicine.
He served as an editor and co-editor 6 times and as a reviewer in 20 international scientific journals. He has also served as a member of the International Peer Review Panel of Ministry for Science, Technology, and Innovation of the Danish Government, for Diabetes and obesity in 2011. Finally, he is participating (2011-now) in the committee for the National Guidelines for Diabetes Management in Greece and his work has been cited over 900 times in the international literature.
AWARDS
He has been awarded with 3 first and 1 second prize for his research projects during national congresses in Diabetes and Internal Medicine. In 2011 his research project was elected as a finalist at the 9th World Congress of Insulin Resistance, Los Angeles, California, USA.
PATENTS
He received a Patent Authorization from the Hellenic Ministry of Development and Innovation for a new microfluidic technique for the molecular detection of various viruses and bacteria.
